Continuing the project I had no idea what to transform the space into but I began to look at whereabouts the space is in context to its surroundings. The area is highly populated by students with Newman College and UCLAN just around the corner.
Researching into university spaces I found a lack of performance and practice space for performing art students. Developing a space for impromptu interactive performances as well as practice areas for students to develop there confidence and skills.
I came up with a concept where ‘Tetris’ like shapes connect together creating a transformable space full of small hidden areas as well as a large performance amphitheatre.
The space can be fully manipulated to create a different configuration for different performances.
The semi permanent structure can be flipped and rotated to adjust the patterns created. I have kept these shapes simple because I don’t want to detract from the existing magical space.
Backstage but is not really backstage: because people can see the whole of the performance, they can sit on top of the Tetris shapes as well as hiding away watching the performance from behind a corner, people can see the whole show not just the polished performance.
